Video Over IP
Video Over IP makes it possible to access up-to-the-second images at any time from any computer anywhere. The images can be stored at remote locations for convenience and/or security, and the Internet can be used as the carrier for the information. Video Over IP systems use a standard video codec to compress video content to a bitstream and then use an IP network to deliver that bitstream over network infrastructure in a stream of IP packets. Modern codec standards such as H.264 (MPEG-4 Part 10) enable compression of standard definition (SD, or broadcast quality) and high definition (HD) video at over 50% gains in compression efficiency over earlier standards such as MPEG-2.

Video Over IP Applications

Video Over IP can be used for a variety of purposes, including downloading, streaming, CCTV surveillance and videoconferencing. Transferring video over IP networks poses challenges in terms of bandwidth and QoS, but modern compression technologies and steadily increasing bandwidth are making it more and more feasible. As an emerging and rapidly evolving industry, new video over IP applications are being developed across a wide range of industries. A few of the major vertical application markets include:
  • Streaming video content
  • IPTV
  • Video surveillance
  • Video on Demand
  • Online education (distance learning)
  • Digital signage
  • Video analytics (e.g., medical video imaging)

IP video simplifies and consolidates video storage media, making video data available for retrieval and transmission from any location on the network and viewable in a standard media player on a PC, or on any TV screen with a decoder attached. With advanced compression technologies and hardware acceleration, digital video can be transferred at line speed (up to Gigabit speeds on a GbE network), and transfer costs are reduced as Ethernet is a more ubiquitous and inexpensive transport medium than traditional coaxial cable.

Network video infrastructure products can be used in a virtually unlimited range of video applications. Lanner products for Video Over IP applications include analog to digital audio/video capture cards, dedicated video server appliances and other network-ready IP technologies. Lanner network video products incorporate the latest media compression technologies such as H.264 AVC/SVC (advanced video codec / scalable video codec) and advanced network transfer technologies including multi-Gigabit Ethernet.
